Casson fires Warriors at Gabba
Promising spinner Beau Casson propelled Western Australia into the box seat in the race for outright points on day three of the Pura Cup match against Queensland.
Casson bagged 5-88 from 24 overs - his first five-wicket haul of the season - during his maiden appearance in a four-day match at the Gabba.
The left-arm wrist-spinner ripped through a Bulls middle-order that capitulated when Clinton Perren (70) edged Ben Edmondson to Marcus North at second slip after the tea interval.
Perren's dismissal triggered a collapse of mammoth proportions with Queensland losing 6-39 in the final 16 overs to be bundled out in its second innings for 242.
Bottom-placed WA, set 220 for victory, suffered an early setback with the dismissal of Chris Rogers (3) but were still well placed at 1-8 at stumps.
Rogers could only shake his head in disbelief after edging a wide delivery outside off stump from Michael Kasprowicz (1-0) to Bulls gloveman Chris Hartley.
Clint Heron remained unbeaten on four with night watchman Casson yet to get off the mark.
They require a further 212 runs to secure their first outright victory of the season but will have to defuse a pitch prone to significant cracking on the fourth day.
Casson said there was plenty of motivation to take wickets with Australian one-day member Brad Hogg looming large in his home state.
Hogg was overtaken in the pecking order by Casson last season but continues to be a stand-out for the Warriors in the shorter form of the game.
"He's a fantastic player and he's bowling really, really well for Australia and his one-day form is incredible," he said.
"It's easy for him to take but it's a great thrill, to be honest. He's someone that I've watched closely through his career, especially because he bowls the same." Casson, 23, put his five-wicket haul down to persistence.
"At times they weren't coming out so well but I just kept persevering," he said.
"It's a tough art and I know I'm going to bowl a few bad balls." Only Perren and all-rounder James Hopes (50), on the comeback trail from a shoulder injury, provided much resistance to the Warriors attack.
The form of the batting list could force Queensland selectors to make several changes after the New Year's break with Martin Love and Craig Philipson again failing to make an impact.
Love (30) fell shortly after fellow Queenslander Andrew Symonds, who is locked in a dogfight to save his international career, was dismissed for 25 in the opening Test against South Africa in Perth.
He has scored 134 runs at 14.89 this season but Queensland's current lack of depth could earn him a reprieve.
Philipson has managed 167 runs at 23.9 but could only manage to add seven runs to his first innings duck on Monday.
Stand-in Queensland skipper Kasprowicz was left fuming earlier in the day after poor fielding by the Bulls (308) virtually handed WA (331) first innings points.
Kasprowicz finished with 7-103 from 32 overs.
