Stormers thump Reds 34-16

Outpaced, mistake-riddled Queensland have slumped to their third straight Super 14 loss, thumped 34-16 by the adventurous Stormers at Suncorp Stadium.

The Cape Town-based visitors stretched the ragged Reds to the limit to break their own winless run in the competition.

Before the match the Stormers had scored just two tries this season, but produced four against a Queensland outfit that couldn't keep up to secure a bonus point.

They torched the tiring home side for three tries in the last 22 minutes after the Reds led 16-13 midway through the second half.

Queensland's defeat, the second straight to a vulnerable outfit after the 43-11 humiliation by the Brumbies last weekend, is sure to consign the Reds to another season as also-rans.

Under-fire Stormers playmaker Peter Grant responded to the criticism at home by bagging 19 points through the opening try from a poor Reds lineout, and kicking six from six with the boot.

No.8 Leroy Houston put Queensland in front for the first time in the 56th minute when he darted over from a quick tap near the line.

Clinton Schifcofske missed his second conversion attempt for the night to leave the score at 16-13 and the Stormers took little time to bounce back.

Stand-out flanker Luke Watson crossed for the try of the match when hooker Schalk Burger split the defence and raced away before finding his two breakaways in support.

Reserve halfback Bolla Conradie and winger Tonderai Chavhanga then crossed in the final 10 minutes to kill off the Reds.

A crowd of almost 18,000 hardy local fans turned up but QRU officials will struggle to see anything near that next Saturday against the Bulls on the basis of Queensland's poor execution.

"at the moment it's just not happening," fullback Chris Latham told ABC Radio after the match.

"It's frustrating but we just have to keep our heads up."

The Reds could count themselves fortunate to only be behind 10-8 at the break after the visitors were held up three times over the line and also wasted several other try-scoring opportunities.

The Stormers showed creativity and adventure from the opening whistle but let the home side off the hook with a litany of handling errors and poor option-taking.

They opened the scoring through Grant's 11th minute penalty goal but Reds rival Berrick Barnes squared the ledger soon after with the first of two field goals, his second a monster 45m effort in the second half.

Queensland dominated the scrums but had their colours lowered in the lineouts where they gifted Grant his 29th minute try after a slick defensive tap-on by Andries Bekker.

The Reds hit back five minutes later when Barnes and Peter Hynes combined to put Latham over in the tackle of Chavhanga.

Both Barnes, brave in defence, and halfback Sam Cordingley suffered head knocks and were being assessed by medics.

"At 16-13 up we should have put the game out of reach," said Reds coach Phil Mooney, who lamented a lack of composure under pressure.
