Footballer dies during training camp
A teenager who died during a pre-season Australian Rules football camp in Victoria's central highlands on Sunday was a recruit who had impressed his new teammates, a club official said.
The 19-year-old Melbourne man collapsed and died during a weekend training camp with about 30 players and officials at Jamieson, near Eildon, about 200km north-east of Melbourne.
Police say the Cranbourne Football Club player was training on private property in The Sideling when he collapsed about 9.30am (AEDT).
Paramedics were called to the property but were unable to revive the man.
The cause of his death is not known.
The man was from Noble Park, but police have yet to release his identity.
In a statement, Cranbourne Football Club president Gerry Kelly said the player collapsed during a training run and died despite desperate efforts to revive him.
"Although the player was a new recruit to the club, he had impressed all with his work ethic and was a popular new addition to the playing group," Mr Kelly said.
"The club will rally around the player's family and the playing group during this difficult period."
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
