Karmichael Hunt to get second crack
Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna has revised his playing strategy for high-profile recruit Karmichael Hunt and will bring him back for the end of the VFL season.
Hunt will play only his second Australian rules match against Frankston at Broadbeach on Saturday after being named at full-back.
His next assignment, which was supposed to be his last match for 2010 under Mckenna's original plans, is a midfield role against the Box Hill Hawks at Southport on July 3.
But McKenna told AAP he's had a tactical rethink and it's likely Hunt will resurface in the VFL in last few weeks of the season.
"We've actually adjusted the plan," McKenna told AAP.
"The best form of his education is actually playing the game and we can only do so much, but we're not deviating from our initial plan.
"It's forward first week, back this week, midfield the following week and then he will probably be iced for a couple of weeks.
"We will sit down and educate him with the rules for a few more weeks and then we will bring him back for a few more games and be guided by his body, his willingness to learn and mental fatigue."
McKenna eased Hunt into Australian rules with an attacking role in his opening match against Coburg and predicted his knowledge of the game, and especially the rules, was about to take a sharp and abrupt learning curve.
The former Bronco has been told to take his chances against Frankston and play on instinct.
"In defence there's a lot of chance for the opposition to manipulate him and we didn't want that in his first game," McKenna said.
"It's going to be fairly meat and potatoes with him. Get down there, find a body and destroy the contest and if you win it away you go.
"If he sits back plays safe, he's not helping himself and he's not helping us.
"It will be a constant education with him with the rules as it is with other players as the rules always change.
"His brute strength is going to be fantastic in a contest, but his speed to step an opponent when he has the ball coming off half back will be an advantage and for the full-back line as well."
