Bullets beat Kings, move to grand final
CJ Bruton and Ebi Ere combined to bury their old club, as Brisbane smashed an eight year drought at the Sydney Entertainment Centre to beat the Kings Thursday night and advance to the NBL grand final series.
The Bullets extended their NBL record winning streak to 20 with the 93-86 win over the Kings, giving them a 2-0 semi-final sweep against the Sydney side.
It was the first time in 17 years Brisbane had made the end of season series and the win kept alive their hopes of a first title in 20 years.
The Bullets led for much of the night, but they needed three three-pointers from Boomers stalwart Bruton in the final quarter to deny Sydney a deciding match and the shot at a fifth straight grand final appearance.
With the score tied at 68-68 in the final quarter, Bruton, who played in Sydney's 2004 and 05 championship winning teams, hit nine unanswered points to break the Kings' hearts.
Bruton finished with 21 points, 16 in the last quarter.
Ere, who also played in the 2004 Sydney title winning side, contributed a game high 23 points, 12 in the final term, as Brisbane surged to an 12 point lead.
Sydney reduced the margin to five inside the last two minutes, with some three-point bombs of their own, but couldn't get any closer.
Brisbane shot 43 per cent from the field to Sydney's 41 per cent.
Forward Russell Hinder top scored for the Kings with 16, and added 11 boards.
The Bullets threatened to break the game open in the third quarter as they raced to a ten point lead with four straight three-pointers, the first two nailed by Ere, but Sydney fought back to be within three at the last break.
At the start, Sydney shot away to a 13-5 lead, but Brisbane hit the front with a 9-0 run.
The Kings briefly regained the lead with a Jason Smith three-pointer, but six straight points set up a 26-21 quarter time advantage for the Bullets.
Although Sydney outrebounded Brisbane 18-7 in the first quarter, the Bullets enjoyed a whopping 13-2 advantage in points from turnovers in the first 12 minutes.
The scores were tied seven times in a nip and tuck second quarter.
