White stars as Somerset exert authority
Australian Cameron White's fifth hundred of the summer left LV County Championship Division Two leaders Somerset in the box-seat as hosts Nottinghamshire were left to toil in the field.
The 23-year-old Australian took full advantage of Notts' depleted bowling attack to plunder 124 from 187 balls, with 16 fours and two sixes and pass 1,000 Championship runs for the season.
White shared century partnerships with Ian Blackwell (58) and Peter Trego (67) to give the Cidermen a lead of 102.
Notts openers Will Jefferson and Jason Gallian then saw out the remaining five overs of play, reaching nine without loss at the close, still 93 behind.
Somerset began the day on 1-83 with Marcus Trescothick looking dangerous on 43, but the former England opener could only add six to his total before being undone by a fine in-swinger from AJ Harris which left the left-hander plumb LBW.
Night-watchman Craig Kieswetter followed him to the pavilion in the next over, bowled through the gate by Nadeem Malik to give Notts an early boost.
The home side stuck to their guns despite having six seamers missing through injury and Ryan Sidebottom playing for England and chipped away at the Somerset line-up throughout the day.
All-rounder Gareth Clough, making only the ninth Championship appearance of his career, chipped in with three valuable wickets, including that of Somerset captain Justin Langer, LBW for 36, and James Hildreth offered a straightforward bat-pad catch off Graeme Swann shortly after lunch.
That brought Blackwell in to join White and the pair accelerated the run-rate with some commanding strokes against the spin of Swann and Samit Patel.
But the burly Blackwell greeted the new ball with a loose shot which saw his downfall, as he slashed a wide delivery from Harris straight to Patel at point, after hitting seven fours and a six in 65 balls.
White was on 97 at tea but looked to be on his way straight after the interval when Harris was convinced the batsman had edged an attempted drive to wicketkeeper Chris Read.
But umpire John Steele gave him not out and White immediately brought up his hundred with a confident drive to the boundary.
Trego then passed 50 off 52 balls before White played on to Clough, who followed up in his next over to pin Trego in front.
At that stage the 29-year-old was in line to beat his career-best of 3-69 but Swann then bowled Steffan Jones for nine and had Charl Willoughby caught at long-off by Jefferson to wrap up the innings with 4-125.
