Thomas sweats on possible AFL finals ban

Collingwood face the potential loss of star Dale Thomas for their qualifying final, when the match review panel makes its assessments on Monday.

The gun midfielder is expected to face a rough conduct charge over an untidy bump on Fremantle's Garrick Ibbotson, with the key question whether Thomas cops a multiple-match ban, stretching into the finals.

A penalty loading for a striking offence earlier this season hurts his cause.

The review panel will determine whether the Magpie, who jumped off the ground to bump Ibbotson, is deemed to have made head or shoulder contact and whether the act was reckless or negligent.

Assuming the offence is graded as low impact, if Thomas receives the lesser grading in either the contact (high or body) or conduct (reckless or negligent) categories, he will be banned for just one game.

That would cause him to miss only Friday night's low stakes home and away game with second-placed Geelong, whereas if he is judged to have acted recklessly and made head contact he faces a two-game suspension.

Fremantle's Nick Lower faces a likely ban, for an uglier looking high bump on Thomas when the Collingwood player was crouched over the ball.

West Coast forward Josh Kennedy was reported on Saturday night for an alleged strike on Brisbane's Mitch Golby, but appeared to make only incidental head contact while spoiling.

But North Melbourne midfielder Jack Ziebell risks a suspension spilling into next season for his high hit on St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt on Saturday night.

Riewoldt spent some time lying on the ground, before playing on and he later headed to the St Kilda rooms for concussion tests, which he passed, allowing him to return to the field.

Ziebell attempted to apologise to the Saints star soon after the incident, but was angrily brushed aside, although Riewoldt said on Sunday that was mainly due to confusion.

"Jack Ziebell came up immediately after and I didn't even know that he was the one that had done it," Riewoldt told the Seven Network's AFL Game Day.

"We got together immediately after the game, so no hard feelings there, that sort of stuff happens on the footy field."

North Melbourne's Levi Greenwood was also reported, for making high contact on St Kilda's David Armitage, in a match which ended the Kangaroos' finals hopes.
