Broncos winger Yow Yeh pushing to play
Queensland and Australian winger Jharal Yow Yeh is one training session away from being rushed into Brisbane's side for Monday night's NRL clash with Newcastle.
Brisbane, riding the Darren Lockyer retirement express, can stitch up a top-four finish by disposing of Newcastle at Ausgrid Stadium.
The last time they secured a top-four spot was in 2006 - the year they farewelled Shane Webcke with a premiership win.
Yow Yeh, who debuted for both Australia and Queensland this year, continued to push his case after another strong workout at Red Hill on Friday, showing little sign of discomfort from the ankle sprain that sidelined him from Lockyer's 350th game last weekend.
While prop Ben Hannant (hip flexor) appears to have lost his battle to take on the Knights, Yow Yeh's chances are looking better by the day.
Another strong training session on Sunday could see youngster Dale Copley relieved of the daunting task of containing NSW winger Akuila Uate.
"He's still a chance," was all Broncos coach Anthony Griffin would say on Yow Yeh's chances on Thursday.
If recalled, it would give the Broncos their lethal Origin right side of Lockyer, Justin Hodges and Yow Yeh up against the Knight's dangerous combination of Kurt Gidley, in-form veteran Adam MacDougall and Uate.
Broncos forward Matt Gillett said the players were excited by the challenge posed by three marquee games in a row leading into the finals.
"Monday night is going to be a real challenge down there in Newcastle," said Gillett who is getting back to his NRL rookie of the year form of 2010.
"They've got a lot of talent in their team and they love to throw the ball around."
Gillett's role has change from last season where he played more on the left edge with his defensive role in the middle third.
"It's a bit different out there playing that front-rowers role and Hook (Griffin) is really big on defence. I'm enjoying it."
Griffin said punters had changed their tune about things in the month or so as with sides stepping up closer to the finals.
"The competition has really condensed up," he said.
"Six weeks ago everyone was saying it was St George and Melbourne but you've got Manly, the Wests Tigers, Warriors and Souths making a charge.
"The key thing for us is our destiny is in our own hands.
"If we win on Monday night we absolutely confirm we're going to finish top four so that's the focus for us.
The top eight order may not been know until after the final round with Brisbane facing testing games against Newcastle, Souths and Manly.
Three wins could see them finish as high as second, guaranteeing them a home final and potential grand final qualifying game.
"We fancy our chances every week," said rookie Griffin who has exceeded most expectations since replacing Ivan Henjak just before the season kicked off.
"Without being disrespectful to anyone, we've got some belief in what we're doing. If we play to our potential on the day we can match it with any other team in the competition."
