Titans play waiting game with teen half
Gold Coast NRL coach John Cartwright says he'll wait to the last minute before deciding whether to throw a 16-year-old halfback into a "man's game" on Monday night against Newcastle.
Australian schoolboys halfback Jordan Rankin has been training with the Titans all week after leading the club's Toyota Cup side to six straight wins.
Despite naming Josh Lewis in the No.7 jersey, Cartwright is toying with the idea of throwing the Year 11 student into the fray as the Titans attempt to keep alive their finals hopes against an in-form Knights side.
"We'll make up our mind tomorrow," the coach said after this morning's final training session at Skilled Park.
"I just want to sleep on it and talk to Jordan and see how he's feeling.
"It's just not a normal situation. The boy's only 16 years old and it's easy to say `Yeah, I want to play'. We've just got to make sure he's 100 per cent ready.
"He's just young. He's a boy and its a man's game, so I've just got to make sure I'm comfortable in my mind that I'm not doing the wrong thing by him.
"I'll have a chat with him over the next 24 hours and we'll make a decision tomorrow."
If selected Rankin would become the third youngest first grader in league history.
Knights custodian Kurt Gidley, who had the week off training to overcome a corked thigh, believes Rankin has a massive task in front of him if he takes the field.
"I don't think I would've been ready for it at 16," Gidley said.
"I don't think I was ready for it at 18, so I am sure we will send some blokes at him and see how he goes."
Adding to the intrigue is the possibility of an early return by Scott Prince, who suffered a broken arm playing for Queensland in the third State of Origin match in July.
The star playmaker will have scans on his arm in Brisbane around midday tomorrow, and could be rushed into the squad if given the all clear.
Whoever takes the field as halfback for the 12th-placed Titans is sure to be targeted by wide running Knights back rower Steve Simpson, who was at his devastating best last start against the Eels.
The Knights will be keen to spoil the Titans' impressive home record, as they aim to notch three wins in row for the first time this year.
"Any three wins in a row would be sensational, because we haven't done that since I've been here at the Knights and that for obvious reasons would help with confidence," said Newcastle coach Brian Smith.
Fijian winger Akuila Uate will be given until tomorrow to take his place in the Knights after returning home from his grandmother's funeral late on Saturday.
Titans hooker Nathan Friend has been cleared to play, while second rower Mark Minichiello has recovered from an ankle injury.
