Broncos' Te'o says 'no holding back'
The doubts remain in the back of his mind but Brisbane NRL utility Ben Te'o has no thoughts of holding anything back following a frustrating season on the sidelines with two broken arms.
Te'o has quickly won his way back into Brisbane's 17-man squad and will play a key role as an impact weapon coming off the bench against Newcastle on Monday night.
The wide-running Te'o is easy to spot these days with his Mal Meninga-like padded brace on the right forearm he's broken twice already this season.
"The brace gives me a lot of confidence even though it's a bit of a nuisance to play with," said Te'o, admitting he was still fearful of re-breaking it.
"The first time I came back I was pretty confident but the second time I had a lot of doubts about whether I was ready and how I'd handle it emotionally if I broke it again.
"It's been a pretty tough year."
Te'o said the second break was "just a coincidence" after copping a heavy whack in exactly the same spot in his comeback game.
Despite medical reassurances the bone is fully healed, Te'o still worries it could snap again.
"All the tests say it's healed but I'm not that confident," he said.
"I'm taking it week by week and every game I get through, I'm pretty happy."
Te'o's confidence improved after making his second comeback through the Queensland Cup.
"That gave me some confidence which is why Hook (coach Anthony Griffin) sent me back there after I kept thinking every time I made a tackle, I was going to break it again," he said.
The fact he's been rushed back off the bench shows how much Griffin value's his game-breaking edge running despite having a lot of back-row depth at his disposal.
Te'o felt missing so much time would count against him, given the team was playing so well before his comeback this month.
"The way the boys were going, for Hook to throw me back in, I'm very happy," he said.
"I had some goals at the start of the season but, with the amount of time I've spent out, I have no right to come back as a starting player."
Prop Ben Hannant (hip flexor) and young winger Jharal Yow Yeh (ankle) weren't named in Griffin's 17-man squad on Tuesday while centre Jack Reed was restricted to bike work for the session.
Hannant's situation, though, might be reviewed over the weekend.
However, the thinking is it might be wiser to wait another week until the clash with South Sydney, given the finals are so close.
Back-up prop Josh McGuire has been getting plenty of raps filling in for Hannant which Te'o said were thoroughly deserved.
"Josh was great last weekend. He really challenged (Cowboys prop) Matt Scott up front.
"He wanted to gauge his performance against one of the best props in the game and he did that."
