Young Lion urges Black, Power to play on
Together they have provided a total of 26 years' service to the Brisbane Lions.
But off-contract veterans Simon Black and Luke Power have been urged to stay for at least another season by teammate Todd Banfield to ensure the battling AFL club rebuilds.
On the back of a standout year in an otherwise dismal Lions season, Black, 32, has indicated he wants to play on in 2012 but neither he or 31-year-old Power have put pen to paper.
Both were at their wily best as they helped the Lions topple arch rivals Gold Coast by 62 points last round - Black with 31 touches and nine clearances and Power 26 disposals.
Banfield said the pair's experience was crucial to the struggling Lions turning it around in 2012 - and beyond.
According to Banfield, the old dogs are teaching new tricks at the Lions.
"If they keep going on they can show us younger blokes the way it is done," the small forward said on Monday.
"It's like any club, you always have those guys who show the way. If we can learn from them it is going to help us.
"And if we bridge that gap (with the top sides) then it's good for the club for the next few years."
Remarkably Black is in career-best form in his 14th season, with his highest average in disposals (27.6).
It is enough to have some rating the 293-gamer as a Brownlow Medal threat.
But Banfield said Black's influence was not restricted to the football field.
"Blacky was unbelievable on the weekend getting out of packs and clearances, and off-field he is showing you ways you can improve yourself," he said.
"Like today he had a touch session with myself so I can improve my hands - little things like that that help you gain confidence."
Banfield needs all the confidence he can get - he kicked 2.5 against the Suns and at one stage missed from a 30m set shot right in front.
But Banfield said everyone had received a shot in the arm ahead of their daunting clash with reigning premiers Collingwood after gaining vengeance against the Suns.
"That was the first game we have played four quarters all year," he said.
"If we can go down with the same mindset (against Collingwood) there is no reason why we can't come away with a win.
"They have been the benchmark for the past two years and if we can go down there and show what we have gained from this week it will be a good challenge to see what we can do."
