Black to sign new deal with Lions
Brisbane midfield star Simon Black says he is set to sign a new contract with the AFL club.
The 32-year-old three-time best and fairest and 2002 Brownlow Medallist said he would sign a one-year deal.
"Next week I should be able to put pen to paper and get the contract done for another year," Black told the Nine Network's Footy Show on Thursday night.
Black's decision is some rare good news in what has so far been a poor off-season for the Lions since their disappointing 13th-placed finish.
Best and fairest Michael Rischitelli has already left the Lions to join new club Gold Coast, with star utility Jared Brennan expected to follow in trade week.
Justin Sherman is another unlikely to stay at Brisbane, while veteran Luke Power is yet to strike a new deal and Josh Drummond is also out of contract.
"I know the club's been a bit disappointed, the fact that it's so late in the year and there's six or seven of their better players, or mature senior players in the squad, out of contract," Black said.
"No club probably wants seven of their regular 22 guys out of contract so late, so in that sense there's a fair bit of disappointment, I suppose.
"But that's the lie of the land up there at the moment and the club's trying to work their way through it as best as possible."
But Black said he expected star forward Brendan Fevola, who is contracted for another two years but is currently under police investigation, to still be with the club next season.
Fevola is alleged to have indecently exposed himself to a woman at a recent function.
The AFL will conduct their own inquiry once the police investigation is completed, although the forward has denied any inappropriate behaviour.
