Glass to captain Eagles again
West Coast defender Darren Glass will captain the club for at least another AFL season after a "unanimous" decision by his teammates and the board for him to continue on in the role.
Glass played just eight games in an injury-plagued 2010 campaign and considered handing over the captaincy duties for the coming season.
But the 29-year-old, who has skippered the club since 2008, eventually decided to stay on in the role, with hard nut defender Beau Waters his likely successor after being named vice-captain.
"Darren has spoken, really since he took the captaincy, that he would like to hand it over," Eagles coach John Worsfold said on Wednesday.
"He doesn't see himself captaining the team right through to the end of his last playing day.
"Beau Waters has shown some outstanding leadership qualities last year and Darren raised the question that if the club thought there was a better captain on the list then he'd be more than comfortable for that decision to be made.
"In our decision-making, and through the players' voice as well as the match committee, it was fairly unanimous that Darren would remain captain.
"He sets a great example for what this team's trying to achieve.
"He's disappointed he didn't get to play much last year (but) we're very confident that he's right to go and contribute, both on and off-field.
"His leadership and strength of character is outstanding and the players really look up to him."
Waters is in the box seat to become captain next year after performing admirably in the role several times last season.
"It certainly puts him in a position to grow into the possibility of being captain," Worsfold said of Waters' promotion to vice-captain.
"It obviously says he's got great leadership qualities.
"He's very switched on, very mature, very focused (and) very team orientated.
"It's a credit to him to get himself where he is."
Daniel Kerr's recovery from last year's torn hamstring is tracking along slower than expected, with the 27-year-old still not back in full training yet.
But Worsfold hopes the dynamic midfielder will rejoin the main training group by the middle of next month, with Kerr aiming to play at least one pre-season game.
"The plan at this stage is he builds up his running and starts to incorporate kicking ... and some more football activities over the next two to three weeks," Worsfold said of Kerr, who suffered the injury in round four last year.
"That's getting him ready to step into training.
"When he actually joins in with the players he'll be ready to go flat out. It's not as though he'll join in and have to build up for a couple of weeks."
West Coast are desperate to regain a fit and firing Kerr after finishing last on the table in 2010.
