Triple top Carmont puts Wigan in charge
Former Newcastle Knight George Carmont helped Wigan run in three tries in eight second-half minutes to blow away Huddersfield 28-10 and return the Warriors to the Super League summit.
Wigan dropped to second spot in the table after Warrington dismantled Salford on the opening day of Magic Weekend and Carmont and co. looked set to stay there after the Giants held them 4-4 at half-time in Edinburgh.
But the 31-year-old ex-Samoa international followed Sam Tomkins and Karl Pryce over the whitewash following the interval to leave Huddersfield trailing in their wake.
Thomas Leuluai grabbed a fifth try before Huddersfield, whose coach Nathan Brown was linked to a return to Australia in midweek, earned a late consolation through Eorl Crabtree.
St Helens kept up the heat on Wigan by hammering Hull KR 54-0, with Chris Flannery one of ten men to cross the whitewash.
Flannery grabbed the fifth score of the game against hapless Hull in the 35th minute, with Ade Gardner adding a late double to round off the scoring in emphatic fashion.
Aussie duo Brent Sherwin and Ryan McGoldrick ran in late tries to ensure Castleford saw off a valiant Catalans comeback to triumph 34-18.
Winger Michael Wainwright's score set Cas on their way only for McGoldrick's first try soon after to be cancelled out by Frederic Vaccari and Olivier Elima.
Sherwin and James Evans powered Castleford back in front and although Gregory Mounis and Jean-Phillipe Baile responded with tries of their own, McGoldrick and Sherwin crossed again to secure victory.
Former Manly Sea Eagles winger Chris Hicks scored twice as Warrington Wolves ran in 12 tries to thrash Salford City Reds 68-16.
Hicks was joined on the scoresheet by another former Sea Eagle in Michael Monaghan but it was Lee Briers and Rhys Williams who stole the show.
Briers notched his 100th try in Warrington colours while Williams marked his Super League debut with a score of his own.
Leeds Rhinos needed a last-gasp try from Danny Buderus to help them overcome Wakefield Wildcats 34-30.
Buderus popped up two minutes from time to score the decisive try as the Rhinos overhauled a 28-16 half-time deficit.
Jarrod Sammut stepped off a plane to have the last word as Crusaders convincingly beat Bradford Bulls 19-0.
The Welsh side's new recruit, whose arrival was delayed by the disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud and a broken down plane in Bangkok, completed the win with a magnificent solo try nine minutes from time.
Michael Witt had earlier helped himself to all 15 points as coach Brian Noble got one over his former club.
Harlequins' revival continues to gather pace as they followed up their shock win at Wigan with a 25-8- win over Hull.
Chad Randall set Quins on their way with the first try and Will Sharp and Luke Dorn also crossed before the break.
Kevin Penny and Luke Gale then went over in the second period with Danny Houghton and Tom Briscoe grabbing consolations for Hull.
