Slater adds to bulging trophy cabinet
Melbourne fullback Billy Slater has won rugby league's first "Player of the Finals" award.
Slater was presented with the trophy, voted on by members of the Australasian Rugby League Writers Association, on Wednesday in the build-up to Sunday's World Club Challenge against Leeds.
He scored seven tries during the 2009 play-offs, in the process becoming only the second player in the Storm's history to notch a century of touchdowns.
"This is a big surprise," Slater said. "Last year's finals seem a long time ago but I'm proud of what the Storm and I achieved."
The 26-year-old's trophy cabinet continues to bulge. He was 2008 International Player of the Year, 2009 Clive Churchill Medallist and has taken home his club's best and fairest gong for the last two years running.
