Training run leaves Broncos bloodied
The Brisbane Broncos have opened a four day NRL pre season camp in northern New South Wales with a bruising training session that left two players needing medical attention after putting their teeth through their lips.
Prop Nick Kenny and tyro Kurtis Lingwoodock both came to the sideline with bloody mouths during the hard run on Thursday morning at Casurina Beach on the Tweed coast.
With the first trial games of the season looming, coach Ivan Henjack has promoted a host of youngsters into his squad and is pleased with how they've aimed up.
"We've made it clear to them there's some opportunities for positions there, we've lost some players from last year and with Justin Hodges being injured we've got quite a few options in a number of areas, so there'll be some competition there," Henjak said.
"It's the time of the year when you have to be doing your opposed stuff; we're trying to get ready for the trials that are coming up and the physicality and intensity certainly have to go up, so I was quite pleased with that but there's still a long way to go."
Corey Parker said even the most established players are feeling the heat.
"There's a lot of players fighting for everyone's position, so you really have to keep on your toes even at training as well as in the game, so you're always looking over your shoulder to see who's coming," Parker said.
"We've done a lot of running, in terms of mileage under our belt, before Christmas and now it's a good opportunity to step up the intensity at training.
"It was a pretty tough session today."
