Police interview Andrew Lovett
Police have interviewed controversial AFL footballer Andrew Lovett over an alleged sexual assault.
St Kilda have confirmed that the new recruit spoke to police on Wednesday, but say they are unaware whether Lovett has been charged.
The Saints suspended Lovett indefinitely a week ago after a woman made a complaint to police about an alleged incident early on Christmas Eve in Port Melbourne.
"St Kilda are aware that Andrew Lovett, has been interviewed by Victoria Police today following an investigation into allegations made by a woman," the Saints said in a statement.
"Andrew has been released, pending summons application.
"At this time the club is not in a position to make any further comment until the investigations have concluded, as to whether or not Andrew will be charged with an offence."
St Kilda gave up their first-round draft pick at No.16 for Lovett in a trade with Essendon.
Only days after he joined the Saints, Lovett was also arrested last month for drunkenness.
While Lovett is undoubtedly a talented midfielder, he also had a history of off-field trouble during his time at the Bombers.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed a 27-year-old Port Melbourne man had been interviewed by detectives about an alleged sexual assault at Port Melbourne.
She said the man had been released pending summons after speaking to detectives from the South Melbourne criminal investigation unit.
She said a brief of evidence would be compiled and it would be checked to see whether a summons would be issued.
