St Kilda footballer Andrew Lovett is facing a police charge of being drunk in a public place, the AFL club announced on Monday night.

A St Kilda statement said the incident happened when Lovett, while on annual leave, was celebrating his birthday with friends at a private residence in St Kilda early Saturday morning.

"The St Kilda Football Club is extremely disappointed that Andrew has put himself in this position,' the statement said.

"The Club is fully investigating what has taken place and will take appropriate action if and when required.

"The matter has now been dealt with by Victoria Police and at this present time no further comment will be made by the club."
