Power seek to avenge loss to Lions

Port Adelaide's loss to Brisbane in round four last year has been called the result that wrecked their season.

Up by 47 points midway through the third quarter, the Power were overrun in the wet by a Lions side inspired by twin spearheads Daniel Bradshaw (five goals) and Jonathan Brown (four), and carried the mental scarring from that result through the rest of 2008.

Now that Power coach Mark Williams' future has been more or less secured by the offer of a new contract, the club will try to ignite the rest of their season by avenging that result against the Lions at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

"We had them where we wanted them for three quarters and then they ran over us in the rain in the fourth quarter," said Power defender Alipate Carlile.

"We knew we probably let one slip there and it wasn't easy rocking up to training the next day and Monday, the week was pretty flat from then on.

"This would be one of the most important games of the year for us, and we've talked about it earlier in the week.

"Hopefully we bring that attitude, play tough and play the football we really want to play, which is fast, play-on football, and bring an exciting game."

Carlile said Port had spent plenty of time over the past two weeks working on becoming a more accountable side, after being reduced to a rabble at times during a 93-point loss to the Western Bulldogs at Darwin in round 12.

"We've worked on it pretty hard over the last couple of weeks, it's really been a focus for us on our defensive area," he said.

"Because we know once we've got the ball we can do things that most other teams can't.

"We've got David Rodan, Shaun Burgoyne who's unfortunately not playing at the moment, but Peter (Burgoyne) and all those other guys who can just make it up on the spot and we think if we can get the ball into their hands it'll be a real bonus for us."
