Melbourne renew arrangement with MCC
After a break of 29 years, the Melbourne Football Club has again become an official sporting section of the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC).
MFC president Jim Stynes hailed the announcement on Wednesday as a great day for the Demons, who won the last of their 12 premierships back in 1964.
Melbourne, who were formed in 1858, claim to be the oldest football club of any code in the world still playing in a professional competition.
But their relationship with the MCC, the managers of the MCG, has often been strained in modern times.
"A lot of hard work went in and for us this symbolises the unification that has been happening for quite a while now," said Stynes, who replaced Paul Gardner as MFC president last year.
"This shows we are not just a tenant, we really are the home club."
The MCC has 10 other sporting sections including cricket, golf, tennis and lacrosse.
The football club was previously a section member from 1889-1980.
Under a separate arrangement, the MCC also provides financial support to the MFC.
