$15 million super museum for MCG
A $15 million super museum will house Australia's best sporting treasures at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The federal government has pledged $15 million from the upcoming Budget to help fund the display of treasures of Australia's sporting history.
Treasurer Peter Costello has backed the National Sports Museum, which will honour the football codes, cricket, the Olympics and other sports.
"This will make the MCG not only the greatest arena in Australia, but the greatest historical sports trust in Australia and one of the greatest tourist attractions," Mr Costello told the Herald Sun.
Melbourne Cricket Club chief executive Tony Gough promised the venue, beneath the northern stand, would be the world's best sports museum.
The museum, expected to attract more than 200,000 visitors a year, will open in November 2007.
It will display up to 5,000 items at any one time.
