Lions slam AFL door shut on Nick Davis
After initially keeping the AFL door ajar for Nick Davis, the Brisbane Lions slammed it shut on the ex-Sydney premiership winner after picking teenager Tom Rockliff in the pre-season draft on Tuesday.
New Lions coach Michael Voss had refused to rule out grabbing Davis with the Lions' No.5 draft pick just last week.
He said the club were looking at three possible options - snapping up a crumbing forward like Davis, an extra midfielder or a journeyman ruckman like former Saint Michael Rix.
But when the dust settled, Davis joined former Melbourne players Nathan Carroll and Adem Yze on the AFL scrap heap after the Lions went with 18-year-old Murray Bushrangers forward/midfielder Rockliff.
He was a standout in this year's TAC Cup competition, kicking a competition-high 59 goals and averaging 23 disposals per match.
Rockliff helped lead the Bushrangers to their first premiership since 1998 and earned 2008 TAC Cup Team of the Year selection.
Rockliff also represented Victoria Country in the 2008 NAB U18 Championships.
"Tom is a smart and creative footballer who can kick goals as a small forward and also play in the midfield," Lions football manager Graeme Allan said.
The Lions finalised their 2009 playing list with another four selections in the rookie draft on Tuesday.
East Perth ruckman Daniel Murray (No.7 overall) and Morningside midfielder/half-back Adam Spackman (Queensland priority pick No.66) were the new additions.
Daniel Dzufer (Pick No.77) and Joel Tippett (Pick No.82) were re-drafted and will spend their third season as Lions rookies.
Spackman had impressed for Morningside in the local AFLQ competition this year and was invited to train with the Lions earlier this month.
He was no stranger to the club, however - he has worked at the Lions Shop at the Gabba for the past two seasons.
Spackman, Murray, Tippett and Dzufer join retained duo Patrick Garner and Irish import Pearce Hanley on the club's rookie list for 2009.
