Hewitt loses top spot

Two poor service games cost Lleyton Hewitt his world No.1 ranking, the possible top seeding at Wimbledon and his chance to make history at the Stella Artois Championships.

Hewitt lost his serve twice from 40-love up against Sebastien Grosjean in the quarter-final at the Queen's Club in west London, allowing the Frenchman to grab an unexpected 6-3 6-4 win and end Hewitt's 15-match winning streak at the grass court tournament.

Hewitt was aiming to become only the third player to win Queen's four times and the first to win it four times in a row.

But the loss, coupled with Andre Agassi's 6-4 7-5 win over Xavier Malisse, means that Hewitt will no longer be top of the world rankings when they are released on Monday and that he will probably go into Wimbledon as second seed behind the American.

Not that Hewitt was bothered.

"I couldn't care less," he said.

"One (of the top two seeds) is at the top (of the draw), one's at the bottom."

Hewitt was more concerned about losing valuable court time ahead of Wimbledon than he was at relinquishing his title.

"It's a tough thing to go out there and win any tournament once, let alone win four in a row," Hewitt said.

"I don't think it's as big a disappointment, bombing out. It would have been nice to go a little further.

"I played three tough matches in a row.

"I feel pretty good at the moment, touch wood, and hopefully it continues that way."

Hewitt looked set for an easy win when he broke Grosjean's serve early to take a 2-1 lead in the first set.

But the eighth seed broke back immediately and pressed his advantage on Hewitt's next service game, eventually breaking the world No.1 after the game went to deuce five times.

Grosjean got another break early in the second set to lead 3-2, then saved a break point with his fifth ace of the match.

But Hewitt went on to win the game and appeared to be settling in for a fight until he was broken again to give Grosjean a 5-4 lead to serve for the match.

Earlier, fellow Australian Chris Guccione lost the junior final 6-4 6-2 to top seed Florin Mergea of Romania.

It was the first time Guccione's serve had been broken throughout the tournament.
