Boomers overwhelm Czechs
A slick Australian Boomers cut the towering Czech Republic down to size with a powerhouse 103-63 victory in the first of their three-game international series at The Southport School.
The tourists had endured 40 hours on a plane after bowing out in a four-nation tournament final in Italy at the weekend - and it showed.
In contrast, the Boomers displayed a hunger that pleased coach Brian Goorjian, especially his debutants Stephen Black and Damien Ryan who both looked comfortable during their stints at the point.
Sydney Kings forward Matthew Nielsen was destructive in the first half with 11 points.
He scored the opening two baskets of the third term before Goorjian rotated the front court with centre Wade Helliwell and Nielsen's NBL teammate David Stiff getting good minutes.
The 40 point margin was Australia's biggest in 11 internationals against the Czechs since 1970, easily beating the 29 point margin the Boomers enjoyed the last time the two countries met in 1988 in Adelaide.
Goorjian was full of praise for Black's eye-catching debut and also the contribution of Nielsen whose athleticism and aggression was a handful for the Czech defence.
Nielsen finished with 15 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes of court time.
"Matt dominated at both ends and was very aggressive which was important because they were very big," said Goorjian.
"We didn't have a Shane Heal or a CJ Bruton and I thought Stephen was exceptional.
