Mauresmo a step closer to title defence
Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo has cruised into the third round of the Australian Open.
The French world No.3 beat Olga Poutchkova of Russia 6-2 6-2, setting up a meeting with Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic.
Mauresmo won last year's Open when her opponent Justine Henin-Hardenne defaulted in the second set.
Wednesday night's match went as the rankings suggested it should.
Mauresmo dropped serve only once - in the third game of the second set.
But she immediately broke back and denied Poutchkova another game.
