Lazaridis angling for new soccer deal
Socceroo Stan Lazaridis is hoping to hammer out a two-year contract with English club Birmingham City after helping the club secure a Premiership place next season.
Manager Steve Bruce has already confirmed the club will be taking up a 12-month option on Lazaridis' contract but the Australian is hoping for more security after what he described as the best season of his career.
He was realistic about his chances of signing a long-term contract at the age of 30 but was optimistic of convincing the board of keeping him on for an extra year.
"I'd like to think we will iron something out. The manager and I have a pretty good understanding," Lazaridis said.
"I'd love to stay, I make no secret about that, but I want a bit of security. I feel I can offer the club another couple of years.
"I am not silly. I know the way the game is now. Something like a four or five year deal, particularly now I'm 30, is going to be a bit too much for the club.
"But a couple of seasons would be great. I think that is pretty fair."
Bruce and Lazaridis are due to hold talks in the next few days.
"I've been pleased with my season. I would say it's been my best season," Lazaridis said.
"I can count the number of bad games on one hand.
