Yze clears his name at tribunal

Melbourne midfielder Adem Yze celebrated clearing his name at the AFL tribunal after none of the 10 witnesses saw him make any illegal contact on Geelong's Will Slade.

Yze was cleared of engaging in rough play against Slade as the pair bumped each other off the ball at Skilled Stadium last Saturday.

The Demons vice-captain can now play in Friday night's Anzac Day clash with Sydney at the SCG and continue his outstanding sequence of successive games, which stands at 137 - the highest of any current AFL player.

Yze was reported by AFL investigations officer Rick Lewis after Slade was carried from the field on a stretcher and took no further part in the game due to concussion.

But Lewis and Slade, who could not recall anything of the incident, could not say if the Demon made any contact with the Cat's head as the pair jostled on Melbourne's forward flank in the second quarter.

The remaining witnesses - emergency umpire Derek Humphery-Smith, Yze's teammates Travis Johnstone, Russell Robertson and Guy Rigoni, a boundary umpire, Geelong's doctor, a trainer and assistant fitness coach - either didn't see anything of the contact or deemed it acceptable.

That left tribunal chairman Brian Collis with no other option to dismiss the charge as the tribunal was satisfied the contact was reasonable.

After the hearing, Yze said he was confident he would beat the charge.

"Without a doubt," he said.

"That sort of stuff happens every game and I just had to get in here and clear my name more than anything and I'm just happy to get away and I can play footy on Friday night.
