Brown in trouble for lying to tribunal

Hawthorn's Campbell Brown could be penalised under the rare charge of misleading the AFL tribunal after becoming the subject of a league investigation.

Brown admitted lying to the tribunal earlier this in an effort to have West Coast captain Chris Judd cleared of an eye-gouging charge, from the round nine game in Launceston.

Brown told Fox Sports on Monday night: "Yeah I did (lie). He obviously wanted to get off, I wanted him to get off, everyone wanted him to get off."

Judd was subsequently cleared of the charge, after Brown told the tribunal while he felt Judd's hand on his face, the Eagle star never put his fingers in the Hawk's eyes.

The AFL said it was considering its position following Brown's television appearance, and that he might be called before the tribunal himself.

An AFL spokesman said the tribunal could punish Brown however it deemed appropriate if the player was cited and found guilty.

He said Brown could be charged if he was found to have failed to have cooperated with the tribunal, failed to answer questions truthfully or made false or misleading statements.

Brown has been one of Hawthorn's best players this season and will be hopeful of playing in Sunday's important game against Port Adelaide, also in Launceston.

If cited, Brown would not be the first player called before the tribunal because of doubts over evidence he had given.

Former North Melbourne defender Ross Smith was found guilty in 1995 of providing unsatisfactory evidence and fined $1000.

The AFL will announce the result of its investigation into Brown on Wednesday.

Hawthorn said in a statement they would cooperate with the AFL but not make any comment.
