Reds winger Brown injures hamstring
It started out as a feel-good plan to lift the spirits but coach Eddie Jones could have been forgiven singing the blues as the Queensland Reds trained to rock music.
The injury-ravaged Reds suffered another blow when rising winger Caleb Brown re-injured his troublesome hamstring at Ballymore.
Brown was set for a return to the Reds side for Saturday night's clash against the Johannesburg-based Lions at Suncorp Stadium before he twinged his hamstring.
The 19-year-old is one of Queensland's most promising young backs after enjoying an eye-opening debut season last year, including a hat-trick of tries against NSW in the Australian Provincial Championship.
Yet to play in the Super 14 this season after tearing his ginger hamstring in the Reds' final trial against the Highlanders on January 26, he again cut a forlorn figure.
The injury came as contemporary rap and hip-hop tunes as well as a few old Aus-rock favourites blared out over the Ballymore PA.
Sports psychologist Richard Fowler suggested the musical move to help the struggling Reds enjoy themselves and forget the pain of their last-start 38-13 loss to the Blues.
"It's a fun idea to have a bit of an upbeat environment at training," said Jones.
"I certainly wasn't in favour of the choice of music but the boys liked it."
Not surprisingly, the authoritative Jones would have preferred "The Boss" to have been on the iPod shuffle chosen by his players.
"I'm very, very conservative - Bruce Springsteen would do me," he said.
Brown's injury has increased the importance of former Wallabies winger Andrew Walker returning from French club Gaillac to play with the Reds.
Jones said the 33-year-old dual international was a 90-95 per cent chance of signing this week and being available to make his Queensland debut against the Highlanders on Friday week in Dunedin.
"Particularly with Caleb reinjuring his hamstring today he's a player we badly need," he said.
"Walks is a natural footballer and has played a lot of rugby and rugby league at a high level.
"He'll bring a lot of excitement to the place which is also important."
Loose-head prop Ben Coutts is set to play through the pain barrier to start against the Lions despite dislocating his shoulder against the Blues.
Jones expects his last-placed side to rebound from their demoralising loss in Auckland in the must-win encounter.
"Everyone realises this is a very important game for us and the boys are definitely up for it," he said.
"You win this game you're back in the hunt, you lose this game and you're struggling to keep in touch.
"And we're playing against a Lions side that's pretty vibrant."
