Point on siren forces Lions-Roos draw
Brisbane has snatched a draw with the Kangaroos with a point right on the final siren from Michael Voss in a thrilling AFL round three encounter at Telstra Dome.
In a match in which the lead changed 17 times, the Roos looked to have caused a boilover when they led by a point at the death, but with their final forward thrust, the Lions worked the ball out to Voss who connected with his kick right on the final siren.
In a moment of high drama, the goal umpire and field umpire consulted about whether the point should stand as Roos fans celebrated what they thought was a famous win.
The point counted and scores were tied 16.13 (109) to both teams, maintaining an unbeaten status for both.
The Lions looked to have the match in their keeping when they came from a goal down at the last change to kick the opening three goals on the final quarter.
But the resilient Roos rallied and an errant defensive clearance by Lion Chris Scott led to Roos captain Anthony Stevens kicking a behind on the run at the 27-minute mark of the final quarter to put his team in front, only for Voss to thwart their hopes.
It was fitting that Voss scored the behind, as it was his five first-half goals that gave his team a chance at victory.
The Lions were forced to re-cast their side in the absence of forward targets Alistair Lynch and Jonathan Brown and Voss (five goals) and Darryl White (two goals) were the makeshift first-half forwards.
The Roos exploited White's absence in the backline by forcing a match-up that had the relatively short Chris Scott on Digby Morrell, with Morrell kicking three first half goals and five for the match.
Roos coach Dean Laidley persisted with Adam Simpson on Voss despite the Lion skipper's superior know-how on playing inside 50, but changed that in the second half, releasing Simpson to be a very valuable contributor in midfield.
