Aussies to fly into barrage of questions
Australia's cricketers are sure to face a hailstorm of questions when they touch down on home soil on Wednesday morning after falling on the wrong side of a 3-0 Chappell-Hadlee series sweep by New Zealand.
The Kiwis surprised themselves by romping to an unprecedented 10-wicket victory over the touring side in the first match in Wellington.
But the next two matches, in which New Zealand chased down targets of 337 at Auckland and 347 at Hamilton, stunned the cricket world.
The Australians have now lost five matches in a row, equalling the streak of the Mark Taylor/Steve Waugh handover period in 1997.
Acting captain Michael Hussey's sunny disposition was stretched to its limits in a week of poor results, poor bowling and poor mental preparation for next month's World Cup.
Hussey will front the waiting media at Sydney airport on Wednesday, still trying to reconcile the stark difference between his wildly successful beginning as an international batsman and the 0-4 ledger he now possesses when captaining the team.
"Its pretty difficult and I feel pretty demoralised really ... I'll probably take a little while to get over it," he said after the final match in Hamilton.
"That's cricket. New Zealand again, another fantastic run chase, and under pressure we just couldn't nail our yorkers or put the ball where we wanted it to go.
"It's disappointing, but it shows us that we still have some work to do before the World Cup."
New Zealand, meanwhile, have now vaulted to third spot on the ICC's one day rankings, not far behind Australia and new No.1 South Africa.
For captain Stephen Fleming, the past week has been some sort of dream.
"Games like that, you win one in a lifetime - to win two in a row is unbelievable," he said.
"If Australia's good enough to get it, we're good enough to chase it down.
"I don't know what the cricket gods have decided about this team, but we're pretty happy with it."
