Chappell-Hadlee Trophy parade rained out
Unseasonal Brisbane weather has rained on the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy parade to end an otherwise thrilling series with a major anti-climax.
The washout left the inaugural one-day Trans-Tasman series tied at one-all and meant the trophy has no rightful home until Australia tours New Zealand in February.
The umpires and match referee Mike Procter abandoned the match at 6.15pm (AEDT) without a ball being bowled, much to the disappointment of a healthy Gabba crowd.
Consistent rain throughout the day in Brisbane prevented play from starting on time, confining players to the change rooms and forcing fans to entertain themselves.
"It was certainly shaping up to be a great day today," said Australian Test and one-day captain Ricky Ponting.
"Obviously it was a very disappointing end as far as the players are concerned and I think everyone was looking forward to today after what happened down in Sydney (during game two)."
Rival skipper Stephen Fleming shared his counterpart's disappointment and said his side would continue to develop in time for the rematch early next year.
Fleming admitted after the horrors of a two-nil Test series whitewash he would have taken a one-all draw before the one-day series started on Sunday.
NZ upset the world champions with a four wicket win in Melbourne before Australia hit back with a 17-run win in Sydney.
"It had been a good series and the two games had been excellent one-day games and I don't think this one would have been any different," Fleming said.
