Hogg under the pump
Allrounder Brad Hogg is under intense pressure to keep his spot in the extended Australian one-day cricket squad to be announced Saturday morning.
His spin bowling has been alarmingly expensive in the domestic limited-overs competition this summer claiming just five wickets at 58.88 at an economy rate of six runs an over.
The West Australian's figures in last month's Chappell-Hadlee series against New Zealand of 0-33 off seven overs and 3-45 off eight overs would not have necessarily cemented his place in the side.
The 2003 World Cup hero has produced some handy knocks late in the order but that shouldn't sway the Australian selectors from giving him the chop despite being man of the match in his last outing.
Winning the honour doesn't appear to have been enough for legspinner Stuart MacGill in the longer version of the game.
Australia is blessed in the batting department and allrounder Andrew Symonds can bowl his off-spinners while part-timers Darren Lehmann and Michael Clarke can bowl out overs on a turning deck.
The national panel is expected to name a large squad to allow players to be rested during the upcoming tri-series starting Friday when Australia plays the West Indies in Melbourne.
Hogg is the only likely casualty with Test outcasts Lehmann and Simon Katich keeping in good nick with respective scores of 92 and 84 in recent ING Cup matches.
Australian coach John Buchanan has described members of the team as "jaded" having come off a schedule including nine Tests and a three-match one-day series in 13 weeks.
There were no major injury worries with young batting maestro Clarke expected to recover from his foot injury in time for the opener against the Windies.
