Scud fired up over home town semi
Mark Philippoussis is licking his lips at the prospect of a home-town semi-final in Melbourne after helping complete Australia's 5-0 Davis Cup whitewash of Sweden.
Melbourne was shaping as the likely venue for the September semi-final against Switzerland after Australia firmed as favourite to win its 28th Cup with a crushing win over the Swedes.
Sydney and Perth were also in the running to host the tie but, no matter where it's played, an excited Australian camp was already upbeat about its chances of going all the way this year.
World No.5 Roger Federer appeared the only man capable of stopping John Fitzgerald's team advancing to a home final against clay-court specialists Argentina or Spain.
The Swiss only have injured world No.76 Michel Kratochvil, 110th-ranked veteran Marc Rosset and world No.172 George Bastl as back-up singles candidates to Federer.
None would strike fear into Philippoussis or world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt, who between them have won all five meetings with the Swiss second-stringers.
Melbourne-born Philippoussis, who made his long-awaited Davis Cup return in Sydney in February, said he was ready to finally represent his country in front of his family and friends.
"I don't think I've ever played a Davis Cup tie in Melbourne and it'll be huge. I've got family and friends there and the atmosphere is great," Philippoussis said.
"There's nothing better than playing a Davis Cup tie in Australia. My first one in a long time was in Sydney and I was extremely nervous but it got me off to a good start.
"I was a lot calmer this tie, a lot more concentrated and I know I'll be even better in the semi-finals against Switzerland."
