Fittler may be under lock and key soon
Brad Fittler could be under lock and key at the Sydney Roosters within four weeks, with the National Rugby League club on Tuesday reiterating its desire to re-sign the former Australian captain.
The 31-year-old Fittler is off contract at the end of the season but is keen to play on and finish his career with the premier.
His management has already opened talks with the Roosters and coach Ricky Stuart threw his support behind Fittler returning next season.
"I look at this year and I think Brad Fittler has got more football in him than just this season," Stuart said.
"On what he did last season and the way he trained this off-season I don't know why he should be looking at retirement. The way he's trained this off-season, the mental attitude is outstanding.
"Sometimes administrators of clubs seem to put a label on your head that you're ready to retire when you hit 30. I don't think that's the case with every player."
Fittler's manager Wayne Beavis held preliminary talks with the Roosters before Christmas and also met with the club in the new year.
Beavis said he would sit down with the Roosters again in the next couple of weeks and was hopeful of having something finalised in the near future.
"We'll probably continue on a couple of weeks into the comp," Beavis said.
"We'll let it get on and get underway and then we can sit down when the dust settles and have a chat.
