Spain, Russia to face off for Hopman Cup
Number one seed Russia will play number two Spain in a powerhouse final of the 19th staging of the $1 million Hopman Cup teams tennis event in Perth.
After a week of surprise results, the tournament seeding committee was proved the best judge after all, with the Russians whitewashing France on Thursday to clinch their place and Spain then ending India's hopes.
With little to choose between the two teams, Spain's Tommy Robredo will start as slight favourite in his singles tie against Dmitry Tursunov.
Robredo said having won one Hopman Cup title already, he was keen to add another to his trophy cupboard.
"Every team in the final has a lot of chances ... I just want to put a little more bit into my tennis to win, and hopefully Anabel can play like yesterday win and win her singles," Robredo said.
Nadia Petrova would ordinarily be a hot favourite against Anabel Medina Garrigues, but an injury cloud over the world No.6 - who needed two treatments for a stomach muscle injury on court yesterday - could hinder her.
Petrova said taking Russia to a first Hopman Cup final was an achievement in itself and was banking on the singles matches to win the $250,000 first prize.
"We really have to be focused in singles and give everything we can," Petrova said.
"If it goes down to a mixed doubles as the deciding point then so be it but I think we have really good chances to win in singles.
"It's the first time for both of us in Perth so well be keeping the fingers crossed that it happens for us."
