Argentina gifted Hopman final berth
Argentina has been gifted a place in its first Hopman Cup tennis final after the mixed teams event claimed another injury victim at Perth's Burswood Dome.
Germany held a 1-0 lead in the Group A tie after the women's singles and appeared on track for a finals berth after Tommy Haas took the opening set from Guillermo Coria.
But Haas received treatment for a groin injury early in the second set and lasted just one more game before withdrawing, handing Coria a 5-7 3-2 walkover.
With Haas unable to contest the mixed doubles, Argentina earned a 2-1 victory in the tie and a first Hopman Cup final.
Haas' injury followed that of Australia's Mark Philippoussis, who was forced to withdraw from the tie against the Netherlands, also with a groin strain.
Coria and Dutchman Peter Wessels have also received treatment for various niggling injuries in the tournament.
Assistant tournament director Rob Casey confirmed the injury to Haas.
"Tommy Haas has been forced to withdraw from his singles match and from the mixed doubles due to a groin strain high up in the groin," Casey said.
"He will be having some scans tomorrow and testing the level of the injury.
"The repercussions obviously are that Argentina are through to the final because of that particular result."
