Bullets smash 36ers in Brisbane
Skipper Sam Mackinnon electrified Brisbane as the Bullets savaged a defenceless Adelaide 116-95 in a lopsided NBL clash.
In a 60 second one-man show just before the end of the third quarter, Mackinnon picked up seven points and swatted away a Brett Wheeler shot to send Brisbane into the final quarter with an unassailable 27-point lead.
The Boomers forward finished his night with 29 points, which he had up by three-quarter time, as the Bullets hit back from a loss to Melbourne the previous night.
Adelaide coach Phil Smyth was greatly impressed by the Bullets power and depth after the demolition.
"It's hard to see how anyone in the league can stop them now," said Smyth.
Brisbane coach Joey Wright elevated Mackinnon into the Chris Anstey class after watching him blow the game apart in the third quarter.
"I said earlier Chris Anstey was head and shoulders above the rest but Sam is right next to him the way he is playing," said Wright.
Brisbane coasted home in the final minutes of the last quarter with its bench on the floor and its starting five cheering from the seats.
Adelaide was powerless to stop Brisbane's run after the first quarter with coach Joey Wright keeping the heat on the 36ers by swinging players off his bench at every opportunity.
Veteran centre Mark Bradtke had to leave the floor with a head cut early in the third quarter as testimony to Brisbane's commitment to playing physical defence.
Brisbane point guard CJ Bruton did a great defensive job on Adelaide import Willie Farley who had a forgettable night finishing with just four points for the match.
Adelaide put up some solid resistance in the first quarter to trail 29-24 and could have been a lot further behind than 14 points at half time had it not been for the accurate shooting of guard Brett Maher who made some tough baskets.
Maher did not have enough offensive support leading Adelaide's scoring with 26 points.
Former Bullet Lonard Copeland came up with six of his seven three-pointers to finish with 21 points.
Brisbane import Ebi Ere sparked the Bullets coming off the bench midway through the first quarter, lighting up with 12 quick points.
After blowing a 21 point lead against Townsville, the 36ers were keen to stay with Brisbane whose five-game winning streak ended the previous night against the Melbourne Tigers.
Brisbane's victory was a great hit-out for next Saturday night's top of the table showdown at home against the Perth Wildcats.
