Queensland Roar downs Knights 2-1
Queensland Roar downed the New Zealand Knights 2-1 in the play-off for seventh place in the A-League's pre-season cup.
The home side failed to win any game in the warm-up competition and with a clutch of injuries and a sending off, coach Paul Nevin was left wondering just what sort of team he will be able to field in next week's season-opener against Newcastle.
Noah Hickey is the most serious concern, limping off with a potentially serious knee injury after just 10 minutes.
Striker Daniel Rodrigues followed him with a hamstring strain and the Knights ended the match with just nine men after Frank Van Eljs was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 74th minute.
Skipper Darren Bazely and striker Sean Devine were also on the casualty list.
"In 24 hours we have gone from having a squad of 20 and getting people healthy and looking optimistic to this," Nevin said.
"But that is what can happen. It is just frustrating."
Also of concern to Nevin was the nature of the defeat, which could easily have been far heavier had Queensland not squandered numerous chances.
"It was our worst performance of the season," said Nevin.
"There are no excuses and to lose some of your strongest players all in one hit is not good."
Queensland squandered several chances in the first half before Reinaldo
headed the first goal in the fourth minute of the second half.
Dario Vidosic doubled Queensland's lead with a 55th-minute tap-in.
At the other end, Bazely squandered a good shooting chance before drilling home a fine strike from the edge of the area in the 65th minute.
