Eels overcome send off to win
Powerhouse prop Fui Fui Moi Moi is set to be rubbed out for the remainder of the NRL season after he was sent off in Parramatta's spiteful 31-18 victory over arch rivals Manly at Parramatta Stadium.
And in another blow for the Eels, star backrower Nathan Hindmarsh picked up an ankle injury late in the game, with the full extent of the damage not yet known.
Moi Moi knocked out opposing prop Brent Kite after collecting him with a swinging right arm in the 49th minute. The NSW forward lay motionless for almost five minutes before he recovered sufficiently to be assisted from the field.
"We had a high shot there ... that was very, very bad - you're sent off," referee Steve Clark told Moi Moi as he pointed to the stands.
Replays suggested Moi Moi caught Kite flush on the jaw, with the incident likely to prematurely end his season for the second consecutive time.
"What did you make of it?" Manly coach Des Hasler replied when a journalist asked him about the tackle.
Told it looked high, Hasler concurred: "It was - correct."
The Eels were up 24-8 at the time and in full control of the match, but the incident fired up the Sea Eagles, who scored two tries in the next 11 minutes to storm back into the contest.
However, the visitors, who overcome a 20-point deficit against Penrith last weekend, were unable to conjure another miracle comeback, with fill-in fullback Luke Burt scoring the match-winner nine minutes from fulltime.
Moi Moi will be sorely missed, as fellow props Aaron Cannings, Adam Peek, Michael Vella and Justin Tsoulos are all sidelined with injury.
The win now propels Parramatta into a share of eighth spot, a phenomenal turnaround after a disastrous start to the year under coach Brian Smith.
His replacement, Jason Taylor, wouldn't entertain talk of a semi-finals appearance just yet.
"I've said all along we'd be disappointed if we don't finish the year as well as we can," Taylor said.
"That's what we're doing at the moment and we want to keep doing that."
However super-sub Dean Widders admitted anything less than a finals appearance would be a let-down after stringing six consecutive victories.
"I think so, we'll be disappointed if we don't make it now we're in there."
Eels' 18-year-old winger Jarryd Hayne continued his golden try-scoring streak with a 13th minute gem.
Hayne, who has now scored 11 tries from his last five games, displayed sensational handling skills to pick up a John Morris cut-out pass around his bootlaces at full speed.
But with Moi, Moi gone, a vocal crowd of 15,404 experienced some nervous moments late in the game as the Sea Eagles threatened to snatch an unlikely victory.
Taylor was livid some close calls went against him during Manly's resurgence, claiming Parramatta players were illegally taken out of play when they were about to score the match-winner.
Moi Moi's hit wasn't the only moment of controversy, with Manly utility Shayne Dunley placed on report for allegedly dropping knees on Eels winger Jarryd Hayne in a clumsy attempted tackle in the 31st minute.
The former Parramatta hooker had previously landed in hot water for a spitting incident at the same ground.
