Smith happy Hayne will play grand final
Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith says he's happy that Parramatta superstar Jarryd Hayne has been cleared to play in Sunday's NRL grand final because he doesn't want any question marks over the result.
Hayne and Eels hooker Matthew Keating were both slapped with grade-one dangerous contact charges following incidents in Friday night's preliminary final win over the Bulldogs, but the penalty wasn't severe enough to see them rubbed out of the decider.
Smith, who himself missed last year's grand final loss to Manly through suspension, didn't want to comment on whether the penalty was just.
"That's not for myself or the club to comment, that's how the match review committee found it," Smith said on Monday.
However the captain said he wanted to take on the best Eels outfit.
"It's better for us because if the outcome was to go our way we know we were playing the full-strength Parramatta side."
Smith said while they would prepare as best they could to stop the Dally M Player of the Year, they were more focused on themselves.
"We won't be talking about whether Hayne's in and Keating's in, our focus is our side and making sure everyone's preparation is right and everyone knows their role on Sunday."
