Remember Sailor's contribution: players
The Rugby Union Players' Association urged the rugby fraternity not to forget disgraced former Wallaby Wendell Sailor's contribution to the game.
"Wendell has made a significant and positive contribution to the success of Australian rugby over a long period of time and on the field has proved to be one of the most successful footballers of his era," a RUPA statement said.
"Notwithstanding this recent event, his many achievements following his successful transition to rugby union should not be overlooked or forgotten."
The statement said RUPA would continue to offer its support to Sailor "for as long as it is needed".
"Whilst RUPA does not condone the use of recreational drugs by its members or the wider community, we extend our condolences and best wishes to Wendell during this difficult time," it said.
RUPA chief executive Tony Dempsey said: "I have spoken to many of the Wallabies who expressed their disappointment at the prospect of not having Wendell in their team for the next two years.
"Wendell has been a respected team member who enjoys a close relationship with many of the players and his wit, humour and personality will be sorely missed.
"He is an enigmatic figure and a crowd pleaser but, above all, a decent, well meaning person."
