Bulldogs forward Willie Mason is considering a switch to rugby union at the end of this season.

The 2004 Clive Churchill medallist believes it is now or never for him to make the switch to the rival code and follow in the footsteps of fellow converts Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri.

"If I'm ever going to union I've got to go now," Mason told a Sydney newspaper.

I probably couldn't wait any longer at my age. The 2007 rugby world cup looks pretty good."

Mason, one of three big name Bulldogs off contract at the end of the year, believes the international appeal of rugby, not necessarily the money, is the attraction.

The All Blacks have previously shown interest in luring Mason but the 24-year-old said he would want to play for the Wallabies and stay in Sydney.

"I had a couple of chats with (Wallabies coach) Eddie Jones a couple of years ago, but I wanted to accomplish a lot more in rugby league," said Mason.

"In the last couple of years I think I probably have accomplished most of those things, so union is pretty exciting to me."
