Swans veteran calls it quits
Sydney utility Daniel McPherson announced his retirement from AFL football after 10 years playing for the Swans.
McPherson, who played in Sydney's 1996 grand final defeat to the Kangaroos, made his debut in 1994 and played 111 games for the Swans.
Another of Sydney's recruits from the New South Wales Riverina region, he played only three matches this season, all before round five.
McPherson, 28, had a frustrating 2003 injured or playing in the seconds.
He was considered unlucky to miss selection for this year's qualifying final against Port Adelaide when Daryn Cresswell made a surprise recovery from injury.
"To get that close to getting in only to get told a couple days before you are not in is pretty disappointing," McPherson told afl.com.au at the time.
The 1996 Rising Star nominee played 14 games in 2002, and in his career kicked 36 AFL goals, and played in five finals.
"... while I'm sad to go I am comfortable with my decision and the belief that I got the very best out of myself throughout my career," McPherson said.
Coach Paul Roos paid tribute to McPherson's resilience and passion for the club.
"Daniel McPherson has been an extremely valuable member of the Swans for many years," Roos said.
