Wests Tiger charged with assault
Wests Tigers forward Bryce Gibbs has been charged with assault and taxi fare evasion following an incident in Campbelltown on Thursday night.
A police spokesman said the 20-year-old Gibbs was picked up by a taxi at North Sydney shortly before midnight and driven to Campbelltown, where he fled without paying.
The driver and two passers-by chased Gibbs and the four people involved entered into a heated argument.
Gibbs pushed one of the bystanders onto the ground and he was later charged by police with common assault and evade taxi fare.
He was granted conditional bail and has been scheduled to appear in Campbelltown Local Court on August 10.
The Tigers made little comment on the matter beyond a statement released by chief executive Steve Noyce, who labelled it a "minor altercation".
"Even though this is on a relatively minor scale for such a charge, we accept that any breach will not be tolerated," added Noyce.
"Wests Tigers sets the highest expectations for the conduct of all its players.
"In fact we were the first club to introduce our own random in-house drug testing.
"We consistently provide training in responsible alcohol practices and a number of our players are involved in driver training programs in schools."
