Agassi advances at US Open
World number one Andre Agassi advanced to the fourth round of the US Open, ousting Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov 6-3 7-6 (7/4) 6-4 in a match suspended Saturday because of rain.
Agassi finally secured his place in the round of 16 and will face fellow American Taylor Dent on Monday for a quarter-final berth.
Agassi has beaten the 22-year-old son of Australian star Jim Dent in their two prior meetings.
Eight-time Grand Slam winner Agassi, the oldest man in the field at 33, stretched his win streak against Kafelnikov to six matches and rose to 8-4 lifetime against the 28-year-old Russian, including a 4-1 mark in Grand Slams.
Agassi, who won the US Open in 1994 and 1999, has won four titles in 2003, including his fourth Australian Open crown, and is a Slam top seed for the first time since the 2000 US Open.
Kafelnikov, 28, had not won consecutive matches since May until reaching the third round here. He considered retirement last year but returned after helping Russia win the Davis Cup.
Agassi ended matters with a backhand winner after one hour and 54 minutes. The match was halted Saturday with Agassi ahead 6-3 0-1.
