Agassi, Federer into quarters
Four-time Australian Open champion Andre Agassi has survived a barrage of aces to win through to the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.
Agassi, the eighth seed, beat Swedish 11th seed Joachim Johansson 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4.
Apart from giving away a distinct advantage in years, Agassi also gave away a lot in power to the Swede who sent down a record 51 aces during the four sets.
In one set alone, Johansson served 33 aces.
Agassi, 34, had to call on all of his experience to stay in the match against his 22-year-old opponent.
Having done that, he needed most of his abundant skill to win it.
And he is likely to have to do the same again next match when he plays defending champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.
One of Federer's many great qualities is his ability to beat the world's best players when he is not at is best himself.
Another, as he showed on Sunday, is to beat those who are far from the best when he is struggling for rhythm, touch and motivation.
Federer, the world No.1, the defending champion and hottest grand slam favourite in the history of the game, played Marcos Baghdatis in a fourth round match at the Rod Laver Arena.
