Tourky holds handstand to win gold
For Loudy Tourky it felt like Athens all over again only this time her handstand held and so did her grip on diving gold.
Six months after being devastated by a bronze finish at the Olympics, Tourky upset Athens gold medallist Chantelle Newbery to win her seventh national 10 metre platform title at the Australian championships on the Gold Coast.
Tourky said she was now able to put the disappointment of the Olympics behind her.
"There are more competitions and life does go on and hopefully I won't be known as the girl that walked on her hands upside down in Athens," she said.
"It makes me think about other things rather than dwell in the past."
It was the first time Tourky and Newbery had competed against each other on the 10m platform since the Athens Games when Newbery became the first Australian to win a diving gold medal at the Olympics since Dick Eve in 1924.
"It showed my preparation really wasn't there and its been good for me to have that kick up the bum and to realise I am not where I should be at the moment," said Newbery.
Tourky's program was the most difficult in the finals but it was the armstand backward double somersault that had haunted her since she lost her balance and a chance gold in Athens.
"I did think about it but I said: 'You can do this'"
This time her hand stand was short but held firm.
