Newbery wins gold in 10m platform
Chantelle Newbery won Australia's first Olympic diving gold medal since 1924 in the women's 10m platform in Athens.
She finished with a score of 590.31 points in front of silver medallist Lao Lishi (576.30) of China while Australian Loudy Tourky (561.66) won the bronze.
Newbery's victory was Australia's first since Dick Eve won gold in the plain high dive in Paris at the 1924 Games and was the first diving gold medal by an Australian woman.
Australia had already won three bronze medals before but they were all in synchronised events which were only introduced at the Sydney Games.
Newbery's victory was Australia's first women's Olympic diving title and comes after her bronze medal on day one of competition in the 3m synchronised springboard with Irina Lashko.
Her husband Robert Newbery has also won two diving bronze medals in Athens in the men's synchronised 10m platform with Matthew Helm and in the men's synchronised 3m springboard with Steven Barnett
The individual events are considered more prestigious than the synchro events and tonight's breakthrough is further proof of Australia's rise as a world power in the sport.
