Dive rivals join forces for new record
Chantelle Newbery and Loudy Tourky took time out from the biggest rivalry in Australian diving to create a new world class combination on the final night of the national championships at the Gold Coast.
Olympic 10 metres champion Newbery and bronze medalist Tourky joined forces in the 10m synchro and emerged with an Australian record.
Excited national head coach Hui Tong described the result as "world class" and predicted the pair could win 2008 gold at Beijing.
Their record score of 351.93 would have won silver at the Athens Games.
"That felt amazing," said Tourky.
Newbery added: "We had nothing to lose and just went for it."
Kathryn Blackshaw and Adele Meagher (263.43) finished second.
Tourky and Newbery set a high standard early with their first two dives receiving a total of eight perfect scores of 10.
"It's always fun to get 10s," said Tourky.
"You've got someone up there to hold your hand with you and things aren't as scary as they may seem."
